Health Technician - Hearing

The incumbent is a senior direct patient care provider responsible for the local management of the national hearing aid program, hearing aid related health care, speech aid related health care where applicable, assistance to staff, and patient education. Responsible for providing guidance and resources to ASPS technical and clerical staff at the VASLCHCS to include affiliated clinical facilities. The senior incumbent manages visits to the Audiology walk-in clinic and scheduled technician visits to provide patient care for hearing and speech aids, Cochlear implant speech processors, and assistive listening devices. Responsibilities include telephone and/or mail communications both within the clinic and medical center. The position manages independent contacts with the patient, family, significant other, medical center staff, colleague and vendor to expedite patient care. Duties include providing maximal patient outcomes on an immediate, as needed basis in the areas of patient education and direction; the removal, placement, cleaning, repair and physical modification of prosthetic devices; the fitting, trouble shooting and electronic reprogramming of prosthetic devices; screening for communication disorders and annual pure tone air audiometric testing. The Senior Health Technician is responsible and, oversees the management of all stock and custom hearing aids, batteries, assistive listening devices and ear mold orders of on- and off-contract devices, inventory and repairs; these are multi-million-dollar devices applied annually for VASLCHCS. The Senior Technician manages Remote Order/Entry System (ROES) entries, errors, certifications, and issues where software upgrades and, quarterly revisions in coordination with co-workers. Incumbent is responsible for Veterans Affairs National Hearing Aid Program (VANHAP) data and the processing of same to VACO are managed by the Senior Health Technician. Responsibilities include discrepancies oversight, delinquent accounts, fee-basis services and unusual cases. The incumbent assures that all Audiology clinic expendable items are ordered and replaced aligned to appropriate timelines; all VANHAP hearing aids and assistive listening devices are ordered, inventoried and maintained, dietary supplies are maintained for speech pathology bedside evaluations. Monitors consults assessing no show rates and compliance with hospital standards. Aid clerical staff regarding scheduling conflicts or questions. Monitors the electronic action required report for delinquent actions on appointment encounters, notifies appropriate provider for completion/correction. Provides advice and training to providers. Follows up on the bi-monthly reports, runs reports for workload, delinquent author signature, checkout of appointments, runs consults report for verification and compliance of hospital standards. Promotion Potential:
The selectee may be promoted to the full performance level without further competition when all regulatory, qualification, and performance requirements are met. Selection at a lower grade level does not guarantee promotion to the full performance level. Work Schedule:

Specialized Experience (for positions at GS-4 and above):
Positions in this series range widely in type and include support duties to medical or health personnel such as audiologists, speech pathologists, medical officers, and optometrists. Therefore, technician experience is experience that required application of the knowledge, methods, and techniques of the position to be filled. OR Education and Training (for GS-5):
Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree, with major study or at least 24 semester hours in subjects directly related to the position. Or, a combination of experience & education. Time-In-Grade Requirement:
Applicants who are current Federal employees and have held a GS grade any time in the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements by the closing date of this announcement. For a GS-06 position you must have served 52 weeks at the GS-05. Employees applying for the GS-05 level are exempt from meeting time in grade requirements. The grade may have been in any occupation, but must have been held in the Federal service. An SF-50 that shows your time-in-grade eligibility must be submitted with your application materials. FOR THE GS-5 Applicants must have One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade (GS-04) in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to:
Creditable work experience as a GS-4 health technician or experience in a medical setting. OR Education:
Applicants may substitute education for the experience required for the GS-05 level. The education must be a 4 year course of study above high school leading to a bachelor's degree with courses directly related to the position. OR Applicants may also combine education and experience to qualify at the GS-05 level. To calculate, first identify the percentage of required education you have earned (when substituting, you cannot use the first 60 semester hours that you earned). Then identify the percentage of required experience you possess. Add the two percentages. The total percentage must equal at least 100 percent to qualify at the GS-05. For example, an applicant who has 9 semester hours of graduate level education (i.e. 50% of graduate education required) and 6 months of creditable specialized experience (i.e. 50% of the required experience) would equal 100% of the required experience for the position FOR THE GS-6 Applicants must have One year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade (GS-05) in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to:
Experience in a Medical Setting and knowledge of performing the full range of routine and non-routine Health Technician assignments with a high level of independence and/or treatment procedures related to patient care and treatment within the Health Technician (Hearing) Audiology specialization. Physical Requirements:
The duties of the position require periods of sitting, standing and walking. Some lifting and carrying testing or computer components weighing up to 50 pounds. Working with patients in the clinic and on the wards requires regular sitting, bending, and standing. Patient transport occasionally requires pushing of wheelchairs.
