Nurse Practitioner - Emergency Department
Coordinate and supervise the delivery of outpatient care for Emergency Department patients including patient evaluation; treatment including biopsies, order appropriate medications, schedule follow-up as needed, appropriate referrals as needed. Serve as primary Emergency Department provider for an independent panel of clinic patients after an initial training period. Perform new patient Emergency Department consultation and return Emergency Department visits and telephone follow up visits and collaborate with Emergency Department staff. Establish a comprehensive plan of care based on clinical findings and standards of care. Establish mutual goals with patient/family. Prescribe medications based on patients' status, accepted scientific guidelines, prescriptive authority, and ongoing evaluation of therapies. Lead and direct others in Emergency Department to assure access to and continuity of care across the VA continuum, between referral bases, and transitioning from inpatient/observation status toward outpatient follow-up care. Order and interpret diagnostic tests, including but not limited to biopsies, laboratory tests, and appropriate radiology studies. Help triage requests for outpatient Emergency Department consultation in a timely manner, coordinate tests and visits based on clinical urgency, and assist in facilitating IFC consults and referrals from other VA facilities. Support and enhance the mission and goals of the VA Salt Lake City Health Care System. Work effectively with others to initiate and lead interdisciplinary groups and establish relationships with professional and/or other related groups within the community. Develop a professional practice by leadership and accomplishments in the development and implementation of best-practice guidelines in the patient care and healthcare delivery. Demonstrate ability to function independently in advanced leadership, critical thinking, problem solving, and project management skills. Is proactive in identifying potential emergency/crisis situations and providing appropriate interventions. Performs procedures within the approved scope of practice and based on documented competencies:
o Performing diagnostic and stabilization procedures based on ACLS protocol. o Performing procedures such as incision and drainage, joint aspiration, suturing o Screening patients to determine the need for hospital admission o Screening patients to determine the need for further health care including consultations o Ordering and interpreting diagnostic studies such as laboratory test, X-rays, electrocardiograms, PFT's, CT, MRI, stress testing, nuclear medicine studies Ordering and/or starting IV solutions and medications. o Ordering and/or inserting nasogastric suction catheters o Ordering or performing bladder catheterization o Ordering one on one status on patients with SI or at risk for elopement o Performing medical clearance exams on patients being admitted to IPU o Performing other procedures as listed in credentialing packet Other duties may include serving on committees and administrative duties as directed by ED nurse manager or chief of medicine service Work Schedule:

Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia. Must be licensed or otherwise recognized as a nurse practitioner in a state in the United States. Possess a master's degree from a program accredited by the NLNAC or CCNE Maintain full and current certification as a nurse practitioner from the American Nurses Association or another nationally recognized certifying body. The certification must be in the specialty to which the individual is being appointed or selected (Primary Care). Grade Determinations:

The position involves considerable standing, walking, stooping, bending, reaching, lifting, and turning. It requires restraining confused patients, repositioning patients, assisting with transferring patients to Wheelchairs/stretchers/cars, and transporting them to other departments or facilities. Mechanical devices available and are required to be used for heavy or difficult to lift patients. The work may involve pushing or lifting weight in excess of 50 pounds and going up and down flights of stairs. The incumbent may be exposed to infected patients and contaminated materials and may be required to don protective clothing in isolation situations or operative/ invasive procedures. This position requires visual acuity, good hearing, distinctive speech and manual dexterity. The position requires the nurse to work for periods of time with arms above shoulder level with neck in a fully flexed or extended position and the ability to physically control or protect his/herself from physically abusive patients.
