Paralegal Specialist

The incumbent performs a variety of paralegal and administrative functions for DCHD's administrative law judges and attorneys, serving as both a paralegal and office manager. This is not a supervisory position. Major duties of this position include but are not limited to the following:
Reviews case records, researches and summarizes relevant laws, summarizes case facts and legal issues, makes recommendations regarding issue or case resolution, reviews and proofreads orders and decisions, prepares orders and decisions using templates or other reference guides, and finalizes orders as requested. Oversees and conducts the docketing of cases to include:
(a) reviewing each case received for completeness; (b) alerting the appropriate administrative law judge or attorney of any identified problems; (c) taking appropriate action when the record is incomplete; (d) inputting pertinent information into the case tracking system. Makes recommendations to the Supervisory Administrative Law Judge regarding case assignments to administrative law judges, organizing the assignments to achieve practical and efficient hearing itineraries and/or case resolutions. Provides guidance to legal assistants which are responsible for providing operational support to the DCHD administrative law judges and attorneys. The incumbent coordinates operational support to maintain optimum office service. Plans the work to be accomplished by the legal assistants, sets and adjusts short-term priorities and deadlines, and prepares schedules for completion of work. Ensures the legal assistants are sufficiently trained to perform the work of the office. Directs the establishment of systems to assist attorneys and administrative law judges to track the progress of matters and cases; ensures that all administrative reports/matters are coordinated for the office; manages contracts for hearing transcripts; and oversees the maintenance of correspondence and topic files for the office. Evaluates office requirements, develops and revises work methods and procedures to meet the demands of the office, and establishes priorities to achieve maximum efficiency in operations and resolve problems encountered. Reviews and prepares memoranda, correspondence, and reports in final form for the review and signature of the administrative law judges. Coordinates with the Administrative Division regarding budget, travel, acquisition, and training issues, including estimating and tracking budgets for monthly travel and court reporting. Answers telephonic and written inquiries and prepares referrals to office staff for action as appropriate. Applicants can qualify for GS-11 by meeting A, B, or C below:
A. Experience To qualify at the GS-11 grade level, you must have at least one FULL year specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-9 grade level. Specialized experience is experience that equipped the applicant with particular knowledge, skills and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the position to be filled. Specialized experience is defined as:
experience performing a variety of analytical paralegal or legal work which demonstrates a practical knowledge of law, the litigation and judicial process and applicable rules, regulations, policies and procedures. Examples of specialized experience may include the following:
analyzing and evaluating legal decisions and case files to identify relevant issues and potential evidence; conducting legal research concerning precedents and past court decisions; composing legal briefs, summaries of analyses and decisions, and pre-hearing documents; interviewing various individuals who can provide insight into cases under review; and preparing evidence and documents to support recommendations. B. Substitution of Appropriate Education for Experience You may substitute education (education that is directly related) for experience at the GS-11 level if you have achieved:
a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree -OR- 3 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree -OR- LL.M., if related C. Combination of Education and Experience A combination of education and specialized experience, which when combined, equal 100% of the qualification requirement. Only directly related education in excess of the first two years of progressively higher level graduate education toward a doctoral or the equivalent graduate degree may be used toward this combination. Don't Be Fooled

The fraudster will send a check to the victim who has accepted a job. The check can be for multiple reasons such as signing bonus, supplies, etc. The victim will be instructed to deposit the check and use the money for any of these reasons and then instructed to send the remaining funds to the fraudster. The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
