LEAD MEDICAL SUPPORT ASSISTANT

The Lead Medical Support Assistant (LMSA) monitors and makes work assignments, provides input on performance, resolves daily task issues and maintains efficient workflow. Assignments include, but are not limited to:
Assuring coverage of the Community Care Services Unit; conducting ongoing reviews to ensure quality of work; Ensuring accurate and timeliness of the NVCC process in accordance with NVCC Guidelines. Assigning workload to individual Non-VA MSAs, Providing guidance to other MSA/AMSA's to include changes in the policies and procedures; Distributing and balancing workload; orientating and providing on-the-job training for new and current MSA/AMSA's in the Community Care Services Department; Organizing the work structure of his/her assigned areas, acting as liaison between MSA's and staff in order to resolve day to day tasking conflicts, and completing other duties and special projects as assigned by the Community Care Chief or Supervisors. Provides support with new MSA applicant interviews and may be asked to sit in on the interview panel. Maintaining vacation schedules to ensure adequate coverage in the Community Care Services Department is met. Maintains high degree of tact and diplomacy is required when dealing with VA customers i.e Veterans, VA staff members, outside providers. The incumbent provides supportive assistance to the Veterans to assure prompt attention to their authorizations and performs at a competent level. Incumbent is responsible for delivering administrative support to the staff and supervisors associated with the Care in the Community process. Scheduling of Care in the Community medical appointments when services are not available or cannot be provided cost effectively at a VA facility. Coordinates with the private sector to authorize and schedule care. Clinical documentation management, correspondence to the veteran and Non-VA providers, tracking of pre- and post-appointment follow-ups. Receives consult requests for long-term and short-term authorization of outpatient fee basis community care. Reviews medical information to determine type of treatment necessary, extent of treatment, estimated costs of community care and adequacy of medical information presented. Work Schedule:

Citizenship. Citizen of the United States. (Non-citizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Handbook 5005, part II, chapter 3, section A, paragraph 3g.) Experience and Education:
(1) Experience. Six months experience of clerical, office or other work that indicates the ability to acquire the particular knowledge and skills needed to perform the duties of the position; or (2) Education. One year above high school; or (3) Experience/Education Combination. Equivalent combination of experience and education are qualifying for entry level for which both education and experience are acceptable. Certification. None required. English Language Proficiency. MSAs must be proficient in spoken and written English in accordance with VA Handbook 5005, part II, chapter 3, section A, paragraph 3j. Grade Determinations:
In addition to the basic requirements for employment listed above, the following education and/or experience criteria must be met when determining the grade of candidates; For the Lead Medical Support Assistant, GS-07 you must possess; Experience. One year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade level, GS-06. Preferred Experience 2 to 3 years of medical/clinical administrative experience preferred. Experience using FBCS, Vista, and Excel Assignment. The GS-0679-07 Lead MSA is responsible for daily workload assessments, assigning work, and assuring proper staffing coverage; evaluating training records; and determining training needs of MSAs to provide support across interdisciplinary settings. The Lead assists the unit with complex and non-standard procedures, including clinical flow processes related to access to care across multiple clinics, specialties, and/or community resources. Assignments at this level include, but are not limited to:
ensuring accurate and timely scheduling of appointments; providing guidance to staff members, to include changes in policies and procedures; creating and maintaining employee work schedules; and acting as a liaison among Advanced MSA staff, patients, and other interdisciplinary staff to resolve day-to-day conflicts. For all assignments above the full performance level, the higher-level duties must consist of significant scope, administrative independence, complexity (difficulty) and range of variety as described in this standard at the specified grade level and be performed by the incumbent at least 25% of the time. Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities. Candidates must demonstrate the KSAs below:
1. Ability to organize work, set priorities, and delegate tasks/responsibilities in order to meet deadlines. 2. Skill in communicating with individuals in order to obtain the desired effect, ensuring compliance with established policies and regulations. 3. Ability to provide staff development and training. 4. Ability to manage staffing requirements, manage priorities, and coordinate work in order to complete duties in an accurate and timely manner. This includes the ability to follow-up on pending issues and demonstrating an understanding of the impact of incomplete work. 5. Advanced knowledge of medical terminology and a wide range of clinical flow processes relating to access to care across multiple clinics, specialties, and/or community resources. 6. Ability to utilize numerous advanced patient systems in support of multiple clinics in an interdisciplinary setting. References:

The work is mostly sedentary and requires incumbent to utilize a personal computer resulting in a large amount of keyboarding/data entry. Faxing clinical documentation to the outside providers/vendors at their request during the scheduling/approving process for Fee Basis care. Additionally, lifting and carrying items such as medical records, paperwork, folders and will be required to do tasks that require some fine manipulation skills/abilities. May be required to work many hours at a computer terminal.

The fraudster will send a check to the victim who has accepted a job. The check can be for multiple reasons such as signing bonus, supplies, etc. The victim will be instructed to deposit the check and use the money for any of these reasons and then instructed to send the remaining funds to the fraudster. The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
