Primary Job DutiesBasic Functions:
Development, operation, and continuous improvement of the SkyWest SMS to ensure compliance with 14 CFR Part 5 and AC 120-92 (current version). Manage the SMS processes within the Safety Department and monitor the Company SMS.
Responsibilities:
Maintaining oversight of the SMS processes to include:
Implementation, maintenance, and day-to-day administration of the SMS Meeting frequently with department Safety Managers to coordinate safety risk management (SRM). Performing hazard identification and safety risk analysis Ensuring communication and coordination with affected personnel in the management of operational risk Facilitating the SRM process with Safety Department process owners Overseeing the day-to-day operation of the SMS in collaboration with the department Safety Managers, Coordinators and Analysts Ensuring focus audits are conducted as requested/required Functioning as the Safety Department and Information Technology (IT) Department Safety Manager Functioning as the Safety Manager for all support departments (e.g., People) that do not have a dedicated Safety manager Representing SkyWest Airlines at industry SMS conferences and other events to gather and share best practices Maintaining the SRM database Ensuring safety promotion throughout SkyWest Airlines Maintaining oversight of the development, implementation, and revisions for SMS related manuals, forms, training materials, and other department communication Duties:
Facilitating the departmental SMS calls and meetings Facilitating the SRM process with Safety Department process owners Developing and facilitating SMS training courses Training SkyWest leaders and employees on their SMS roles and responsibilities Coordinating and designing continuous improvement initiatives for the SMS Participating in Company safety calls and meetings as requested/required Preparing SMS/SRM reports for Company safety meetings Performing data collection for the Internal Evaluation Program (IEP) Performing process measurements of external interfaces Monitoring the effectiveness of safety risk controls Developing and updating the Company SMS continuous improvement initiatives Supporting SMS initiatives by:
Being designated as a Safety Department point-of-contact for SMS development Ensuring SMS processes are established, implemented, maintained, and integrated Facilitating hazard identification and safety risk analysis Ensuring promotion of safety expectations throughout the organization Regularly reporting to the (Managing) Director Safety on the performance of the SMS and on any need for improvement Weekly:
Reporting the status of the Company SMS initiatives to the (Managing) Director Safety Monthly:
Tracking and reporting Company and departmental SMS performance and continuous improvement initiatives Monthly:
Participating in SMS performance review meetings with SkyWest's FAA leadership team Monthly:
Reviewing and facilitating Company SMS training content to ensure compliance with all applicable SMS regulations At least annually:
Reviewing (and updating as needed) Safety Management System (SMS) Manual and Safety Department Safety Program Manual Minimum Requirements Detailed understanding of aviation safety standards and safe operating practices, Federal Aviation Regulations (FARs), SkyWest Operations Specifications (Ops Specs), and SkyWest Safety Programs Excellent verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills Ability to work in a team environment Ability to make presentations to leadership groups Ability to simultaneously manage multiple projects and effectively manage time Highly proficient with the entire Microsoft Office Suite Demonstrated attention to detail Strong business acumen and knowledge of airline industry and internal work groups Airline safety management experience College degree preferred Physical and Other Requirements Ability to sit and work at a computer for extended periods of time.
